I hate you, Payless
Posted: April 2, 2010 Filed under: War and Peace 7 CommentsHere’s a typical situation: the Romgi and I are at a store. We’ve collected our awesome purchases and brought them up to the cashier. She scans them, puts them in a bag, and as I swipe my debit card she asks, “Can I get your phone number/zip code?”
I sigh. “Do you need it?” I respond.
She says something about “information purposes” or an equally incoherent phrase. So I decline.
The Romgi shakes his head and walks away. As we walk out of the store, he asks me why I couldn’t just give them my phone number (or zip code). Grouchily, I tell him that I don’t like them having my information.
Today, faithful readers, the Romgi admitted that I was totally right.
We’d gone to Payless recently to replace my one pair of black shoes (I bought the old ones in 2006), and just to make the Romgi’s life easier I gave the cashier my phone number. Actually, just to be ornery, I gave her the Romgi’s phone number. And we left the store without issue.
BUT TODAY.
Today the Romgi got a text message from Payless!
PAYLESS thx U 4 giving us ur #! Get 20% off ur next purchase w/code 33079 thru 4/11
Maybe this doesn’t seem like a big deal to you, especially since I was able to call and use an automated system to remove the Romgi’s number from their mailing list. But it’s a HUGE deal to me. Unsolicited texts! Those cost ME money! Email is one thing – it’s easy to click unsubscribe or even call it spam. But a text seems much more invasive (and can I point out again, it costs me money to receive).
The Romgi wonders if this could make a class-action lawsuit.
Regardless, I now feel completely justified in flat-out refusing to give my phone number to stores now. I spoke with a Payless customer service guy over the phone, and he explained that they do collect phone numbers for “marketing,” which I never would have anticipated to mean “We will sign you up for our text message mailing list and bombard you with stupid messages.”
Fail, Payless.
Sad day.
Posted: March 2, 2010 Filed under: War and Peace Leave a commentI got so caught up in posting pictures of our trip and finding cool things I want that I forgot to tell you: my pet rat died last weekend.
He was rather old, for a rat; it’s been just over two years since I got him. The past few weeks have been hard because the poor little guy’s health was really deteriorating. By the end he was so weak he couldn’t eat or drink at all. I know, he was just a rat, but it was sad to see him suffering and then finally pass on late Friday night.
Sniff sniff.
We still have the Romgi’s rat, who seems to be perfectly healthy still. The two were about the same age, so we’ll see how the Romgi’s rat holds up. But I miss mine!
February is over!
Posted: March 1, 2010 Filed under: All's Well That Ends Well, Brothers Karamazov, War and Peace 3 CommentsWe really had a miserable month, and I’m so glad February is over. How can such a short month feel so long?
Good things that happened: surviving, going to California for a friend’s wedding, and throwing a mustache party for the Bwun’s first birthday (pictures forthcoming).
Our trip to California was extremely short, but we took some pictures at the Oakland temple so we could prove we were having fun. See?

We were seated near the cake at the reception, but not in a good picture-taking position, and this is the best I was able to get while trying to keep the Bwun from grabbing the camera, my food, the candles, my glass of water...
It was a very enjoyable trip for the Romgi and I, although I think it would have felt more like a vacation if it had been longer than 30 hours. We were impressed with how the Bwun did on the plane – he mostly just flirted (quite shamelessly) with the stewardess on the way there, and tried to look out the window on the way back. Not too bad.
As for the mustache party, I had Quentin take pictures with his nice camera, and I’m waiting to get copies. In the meantime, please compare these pictures of Ron Swanson from Parks & Recreation and the Romgi with his mustache.
More posts soon, I promise! Now that I’m not sick and finally have working internet again, I should be writing at least every other day.
